SALT Core Team


Bernard Chabari:
Bernard Chabari is a founder member and the President/Chairperson of SALT. He is currently working with Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government in the Department of Immigration. Chabari holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Moi University in Political Science. He is currently doing a Masters in Public Policy, and Administration from Kenyatta University. He has many years of experience working in challenging leadership positions with various leading international non-governmental organizations at national and international level. Chabari has diverse wealth of skills in project cycle management, organizational leadership and development, teambuilding, relationship building, guidance and counseling, conflict resolution, marketing, resource mobilization and reporting, administration and logistical support, training and facilitation and possesses excellent communication skills among others. Chabari is the link person for Institutional Development, Collaboration and Consultancy and Policy, Advocacy, Research and Public Opinion Influence.

Simon Mitambo:
Simon Mitambo is a founder member and the Executive Secretary of SALT. He is a Thematic Coordinator for the African Biodiversity Network (ABN). Simon is an initiated man into the four key rites of passage of Tharaka men; Kumerua, Gutaanua, Kuirwa Gaaruni and Kuuma Njuri. He is a member of Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders which is the custodial governance institution for the cultural practices of the Tharaka and Meru people. He is a member of Bwairi clan, an indigenous clan in Tharaka associated with custodianship of sacred natural sites. Simon holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Nairobi. He is about to complete an Executive Masters degree in Public Policy, Law and Governance from Kenyatta University. He has more than ten years of experience working in challenging leadership positions with various leading organizations/networks at national, regional and international level. Simon is widely experienced in working with local communities on issues of indigenous knowledge and practices. He has diverse wealth of skills in project cycle management, organizational leadership and development, teambuilding, networking and relationship building, guidance and counseling, conflict resolution, marketing, resource mobilization and reporting, administration and logistical support, training and facilitation and possesses excellent communication skills among others. Simon is the link person for thematic area on Seed Diversity and Livelihoods and Community Eco-Cultural Governance.

Harriet Mugambi:
Harriet Mugambi is a founder member and the Honorable Treasurer of SALT. She is currently working with Teachers’ Service Commission as tutor at the Meru Teachers’ College. She is adjunct lecturer at the Bugema University at the Kiriiria Campus. She holds Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and Master of Arts in Linguistics from Kenyatta University. She has wealth of experience in teaching, coaching and adjudicating drama festivals in Kenya. She is author of many English text books for primary and secondary schools through working with Jomo Kenyatta Foundation Educational Publishers. She has diverse wealth of skills in teambuilding, relationship building, guidance and counseling, conflict resolution, reporting, training and facilitation and possesses excellent writing and communication skills among others. Harriet is the link person for the thematic area on Youth and Indigenous Knowledge Transfer.

Agostine Mwaniki:
Agostine Mwaniki is a member of the SALT Core Team and the Assistant Secretary for SALT. He is a dynamic young man and quite talented in community mobilization. He is an initiated member of Bwairi clan, an indigenous clan in Tharaka Community associated with custodianship of sacred sites. Mwaniki holds a diploma in Sales and Marketing and has great passion for working with indigenous cultures and practices in Kenya. He is currently the Programme Coordinator for the Society for Alternative Learning and Transformation (SALT). With support of other Core Team members, Agostine facilitates SALT’s work on ground along the various thematic areas. He is the team leader of the working group on traditional knowledge and medicine.

Evangeline Kagwiria (Kariithi):
Evangeline Kariithi is a member of the SALT Core Team and the Organizing Secretary for SALT. She is currently working with Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government in the Department of Civil Registration. Kariithi holds a Bachelor of Science in Information Science and an Honours Bachelor of Information Science from University of South Africa (UNISA). She is currently doing a Msc. degree in Information Science at UNISA specializing in Knowledge Management. She possesses excellent research skills with over 5 years cumulative experience in monitoring and evaluation of various programs and projects especially in the field of knowledge management. Working towards promoting the indigenous knowledge practices is her main passion. She has a wealth of skills in networking and partnership building. Kariithi is also an ISO Auditor where she is involved in developing Quality Manual System for various institutions including international organisations.
